About the University

Budapest University of Technology and Economics is a prestigious Hungarian higher education institute, committed to differentiated, multilevel, high-standard education, founded on intensive basic training, research, development and innovation, and scientific qualification in technical and natural sciences and in certain fields of economic and social sciences.

BME can trace its roots back to 1782 and was the first institute in Europe to train engineers at the university level. The University has a prestigious past and boasts several Nobel Prize winners amongst its alumni. The University has some 24,000 students over 8 faculties and approximately 1300 academic staff. The 8 faculties of the University of Technology have their individual characteristics but they all aim at outstanding educational results. The faculties cover such wide scientific areas that are well enough to understand and study within the time frames of the courses. The qualified professionals have strong technological and scientific base knowledge and economical skills and are also able to apply structural approaches to various processes.

The Budapest University of Technology and Economics aims to promote the characteristics of a traditional research university and provide unity of theory and practice, with high standard theoretical foundations and practical training based on industrial relationships. Taking into consideration the progress of sciences and the changes of the demands of society; BME regards it as its task to develop the contents of training permanently both in the field of multilevel and multilingual education.

An increasing number of international students study at The Budapest University of Technology and Economics and regular full-time programs in English are offered at B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. levels. Our students can join international exchange programs and spend some – longer or shorter - time abroad to obtain special skills and good command of foreign languages, and also to make new friends. Past years have proven that degrees from and the knowledge and skills obtained at the University of Technology are a valuable passport to the work market.
